Every morning starts the same way. I make a Cafe Latte Shakeology and brew a strong, dark espresso on my Nespresso machine. The smell fills the kitchen before I’ve even started stretching. By the time I’m foam rolling my thoracic spine, the first sip of that espresso hits and the day officially begins. (If you want to try Nespresso, use my referral code YBW559 at checkout.)

I’m a black coffee drinker. No sugar, no cream, no oat-milk nonsense. Just the coffee. Which means the coffee itself has to be exceptional, because there’s nothing to hide behind.

I’ve tried a lot of subscriptions, a lot of roasters, and a lot of methods. Here are five things to look for — and I mean deliver in both senses of the word: great coffee, reliably, to your door.

What I Look For in a Subscription

Dark roast options (not just light-roast, single-origin precious stuff). Freshness — roasted within days of shipping. Flexibility — I want to adjust frequency, skip months, or cancel without a PhD in website navigation. And value. I’m willing to pay for quality, but not for branding.

Pick #1: Best for Espresso Lovers

If your primary machine is a Nespresso (like mine with the Intenso pods and Double Espresso Scuro), you want beans that pull a thick, rich shot with crema. Look for subscriptions that offer espresso-specific roasts with a dark, full-bodied profile.

Pick #2: Best Dark Roast Variety

Rotating single-origin dark roasts that change monthly. The joy here is trying something new every month without having to research roasters yourself. Look for roasters who prioritize freshness and ship within days of roasting.

Pick #3: Best Value

Great coffee at under $15/bag. These exist, and they’re better than anything you’ll find at the grocery store. The key is buying direct from smaller roasters who don’t have the overhead of big brands.

Pick #4: Best for Gifting

If you want to send a golfer buddy a gift that isn’t another head cover, a coffee subscription is the move. Look for ones with sharp packaging and a personal note option.

Pick #5: Best Overall

The one I keep re-ordering. Consistent quality, great dark roast selection, and a subscription experience that doesn’t feel like a commitment ceremony.

Why Coffee Matters More Than You Think

This isn’t really about coffee. It’s about ritual. The 20 minutes I spend every morning with my coffee and my notebook — no phone, no screen — is the most productive part of my day. Not because I’m getting work done, but because I’m getting still. And stillness is where the best decisions come from.

When your coffee is good enough to make you slow down and actually taste it, you don’t rush through the morning. You sit. You think. You breathe. And that tiny shift in pace cascades into everything else.

I talk about the full morning ritual — coffee, movement, intention-setting — in System #1 of The Saturday Morning Blueprint.
